Juanita Johnson: A Lifetime of Service and Community Empowerment

Councilwoman Juanita Johnson’s journey is one of resilience, service, and unwavering dedication to District 2 and the greater Omaha community. Her story is deeply rooted in the principles of community engagement, advocacy, and leadership, shaped by her experiences from childhood to public service.

Roots That Shaped Her Path

Born in Omaha to James "Bullet" Johnson and Lovie Johnson, Juanita's early years were defined by both entrepreneurial and community values. Her father, Bullet, owned a convenience/candy store at 20th and Lake in the 1960s and 70s, where she witnessed firsthand the power of local businesses in building strong neighborhoods. However, after her parents separated, Juanita’s roots stretched to East St. Louis, Illinois, where she was raised by her grandparents.

In 1976, she returned to Omaha as a young single mother, seeking to build a future for herself and her child. The Omaha community embraced her, providing her with the foundation to grow and learn about the strength of a unified neighborhood. This experience instilled in her a deep commitment to giving back and improving the lives of others.

Laying the Foundation for Leadership

Determined to achieve financial stability and professional growth, Juanita earned her Associate Degree as a Medical Assistant from Metropolitan Community College. Her first job at a blood bank exposed her to diverse people and perspectives, strengthening her ability to connect with others. It was in these early years that she realized the true meaning of community—one where people help one another to succeed.

In 1993, as she continued to develop professionally, she had a pivotal encounter with Cleveland Vaughn, the first U.S. Marshal in Omaha appointed by President Clinton. This introduction led her to Blacks In Government (B.I.G.), where she received national leadership training and expanded her professional and advocacy skills.

A Natural Leader in the Community

By 1999, Juanita transitioned from the plasma center to a career at Mutual of Omaha, gaining expertise in insurance and financial planning. This knowledge paved the way for her to become a homeowner in District 2 in 2003. Her leadership skills did not go unnoticed—her neighbors knocked on her door, urging her to step up as a Neighborhood Association President. Taking this role seriously, Juanita began attending City Council meetings to understand policy, decision-making, and how to advocate effectively for her community.

Her involvement grew as she joined North Omaha Neighborhood Association (NONA), where she served as Vice President. Under her leadership, she spearheaded the creation of the NONA logo and helped develop their first website, strengthening their visibility and influence.

Building Coalitions and Creating Change

Juanita’s commitment extended beyond her immediate neighborhood. She became a part of a coalition that worked to establish a community center to serve residents across Omaha. Collaborating with Carle Christian of North Omaha, Janet Bonet of South Omaha, and representatives from various parts of the city, this group formed ONE Omaha—a nonprofit that continues to advocate for community-driven solutions. Today, Kimara Snipes serves as the Executive Director, carrying forward the vision Juanita helped establish.
